Teenagers Self-assessment

October 7, 2017Nena Chalhoub

Self-assessment means self-awareness

By Nena A.A. Chalhoub

The purpose of the assessment is to give teenagers opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of content, concepts, and skills to provide feedback in order to improve their learning.

Assessment is a critical aspect of the learning process, it determines whether or not the causes learning objectives have been met. It’s a key component of learning, the grades of the exams show how much the students have learned and applied. It helps teachers as much as it helps the student to define what they need to know. An assessment provides an essential pattern for the teenagers’ decision about what to major in.

Assessment has to be honest, it helps them to understand who they are, become aware of their strengths, weaknesses, and feelings. This is how they will figure out how to make a decision based on this knowledge. They will realize that to improve there is hard work.

The cycle starts by assessing themselves, plan, implement, correct, re-assess, adjust, plan then try again.

A SWOT analysis for goal setting [Strengths | Weaknesses | Opportunities | Threats] is a great tool for helping students be realistic about what they can really achieve.

To handle a personal SWOT analysis for goal setting, for the life and education aspects they are considering, just write down everything they can think of in each category – strength | weakness | opportunity | threat – whether they think it’s really relevant or not.

Identify key strengths that will ultimately help them achieve their goals. Not all of their strengths will help them achieve their goals – they may be a brilliant violin player, but this probably won’t help them get fit!

Teenagers also need to identify which of their weaknesses are likely to get in the way of their achievements. Again, not all weaknesses will jeopardize their ability to achieve goals, but they need to identify which ones matter for them and their ability to succeed.

Once they have got it all down, they need to stand back and take a look at the result. What’s missing? What are the recurring ideas? Where are the connections between the life and education aspects? Are there any other aspects that are more or less apparent after this process?

The next step is to take this ‘brainstormed’ information and gain some real insight from their results. Now they need to highlight the key items. The outcome you want from the SWOT analysis for goal setting for each aspect is a short list of:

  • What opportunities are best for them to pursue
  • What internal strengths they can use to enhance their pursuit of these opportunities
  • What threats they need to eliminate/minimise
  • What internal strengths they can use to overcome these threats
  • What strengths they should consider making stronger to further enhance their ability to pursue their goals
  • What weaknesses they need to improve on, or manage so that they don’t impede their goal setting.

Teens have to assess themselves frequently when they know themselves more and track their improvement, they will know their values and the values of others. It’s where they can plan ahead, take action, correct what they did wrong, adjust, plan then take action again.

Self-awareness and self-assessment are fundamental to make a change. When they don’t know themselves it’s hard to change. Teens must learn how to correct themselves, this makes them concentrate and Discover their mistakes their weaknesses and their strengths. when they discovered what they did wrong, why and how to correct it.

The teenagers’ improvement increases drastically around 40% after few months.

Assessment is essential for a career decision. It will make the teenagers aware of their future and what to major in. This tool will define the career that fits their skills and what they love.

Kids have dreams of what they want to become since they were little but as they grow their interests start to change. They would like to do other things but they have no clue how these skills habits and interest will be translated into their future career. On top of that, there are the voices around telling them who they are and what they should be. It’s really hard to face and resist these voices if they don’t really know themselves. The usual scenario that they might end up with a career that is not for them.

Learning self-assessment will make them know who they are, what they love, then to prepare for that. They must explore the career they want and love. They will spend the majority of their life at work.

To succeed you must love what you do because 80% depends on their purpose and their emotions.

Statistics show that up to 70% off students switch their major the first year, and 22% switch their majors the second or third year.

Using the wheel of life, Teenagers will be able to reflect and gain some insight into the balance of life and how satisfied they are in life’s different areas.

the Wheel of Life, split into major categories of life. They will identify areas to focus on, and get a great visual representation first at their current situation than where they need to make a progress to create a life balance.

  • Put a small dot representing where they are today by asking for example:

Why did you score yourself in each category the way you did?
What is my ideal score for each category to achieve in the next month, 3 months, 6 months, one year?
Where are my biggest gaps in satisfaction levels?
Which area of my life do I primarily want to focus on to enhance my satisfaction levels?

An important thing to remember is that this is your Wheel of life. Is your current wheel crooked or is it balanced?

This will show the teens how much balance they have in their lives and the areas that need to be improved.

  • Circle the number representing where they want to be in your future.

Afterwards, let them consider their first wheel made the dots if this is wheels shape of their car, What would happen if they are driving 100km/h on the highway?

That test will make them realize the importance of having a work-life balance and the inconvenient side effect on their lives.

  • Let them take immediate action by answering these questions.

What are the top 3 areas, you are interested in improving?

Build Self-confidence using the goal setting process

Posted by: Nena Chalhoub

Self-confidence is the power of whatever you want to achieve in life, the more you believe in yourself the more getting to where you want would be easier. Even though building self-confidence is not that easy. The more you work on your abilities the more you can develop and build your self-confidence.

In this interview, we are talking about self-confidence for Adults, even though self-esteem starts to be built since childhood and this is mostly the role of the parents. If you become an adult and still lake self-confidence, take into consideration the following:

It’s important to know that there is nothing that can’t be fixed, all you need is the will to overcome what is holding you back, even though it gets harder with age. Usually, we know that we have low self-confidence and in which area, but there is no one to blame, there is no awareness about self-development in our educational systems, especially in schools. It’s a must to work on personal self-development and abilities of the students that will make them achieve a lot more in their personal and professional life.

When you feel uncomfortable in some or all areas of your life; ex: in society, with friends, workplace… The main issue, that we never know what exactly the problem is. Set a goal to build your self-confidence because it’s your key to success, It could be within your home, friends, family, kids… We feel insecure in many situations but the core of the problem is that we don’t know exactly what it is.

The best way to figure it out and deal with it is to sit alone, concentrate, dig deep inside and ask yourself, write down the answers:

  • What does self-confidence mean to you?
  • What is stopping you from loving yourself?
  • Why and what exactly is stopping you from succeeding?

For example, if you are not comfortable with your look, state exactly what it is? When you start finding the exact answers, then you can find the right solution. Do you not feel comfortable with your look, hair, face, body…? are you not satisfied with your educational level, your work, car…? When you see other people have things that you don’t have and you envy, this causes you to feel less when you don’t have self-confidence.

Then imagine yourself having what makes you feel uncomfortable, visualize you have the hair, the body, the man, the job… you always wanted! How does possessing what you always wanted makes you feel? then write it down. Writing down your goals gives completely different results than inner thinking or talking with someone. If you feel that this is the right answer then you can start working on building your self-confidence. Remember, every problem has a solution.

Every time we want to do something, we spontaneously think about doing it in a perfect way.

“There is nothing such as perfection”. No one ever was perfect and no one will ever be. Just always try to do your best. Don’t let anyone put you down, making you believe that they are perfect and you are not. The more you love and trust yourself the more you will never accept anyone to treat you less than you deserve and you become unbeatable. It’s like wearing a bulletproof vest.

In many cases, we would like to hear other people’s opinion and comments about us so we can work on our self-improvement. To get better results sometimes we need these comments and feedbacks from people that we trust, but On the other hand, don’t let destructive people pull you down or hurt your feelings. Be aware of the type of criticism not everyone around wants what is best for you.

Usually, you give yourselves a credit when you do something right, on the other hand when you do something wrong you feel ashamed. Everyone makes mistakes, what makes the difference is to know what you did wrong and learn from your mistake.

We need to control our self-talks and use positive words because they are orders to your brain that will act accordingly, so watch the words you feed your brain with. “Stay positive” is not only a slogan.

There is a big role for the body language in reflecting and communicating with your self-confidence:

  • 55% your body language
  • 38% is the tone of voice
  • 7% is the actual words

The way you enter, walk, sit, move, behave… reflects the level of your self-confidence.

After all, you need to surround yourself with people you trust, people who love you, and want what is best for you. Stay away from harmful people, there is no interest to keep them around.
